Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink identifies key areas Leeds United and Marcelo Bielsa need to improve

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has identified the areas of improvement that need to be made by Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds United.

The Whites started the season well - winning three out of their opening six Premier League matches after returning to the top-flight for the first time in 16 years.

As well as that, impressive performances against Liverpool and Manchester City demonstrated to the rest of the division that Bielsa's side could be a difficult team to come up against this season.

However, in the last couple of matches, the Yorkshire-based club were beaten 4-1 by both Leicester City and then Crystal Palace before the international break.

Which Leeds United players have to improve against Arsenal?

On Sunday, Leeds take on Arsenal, as Bielsa and his men look to bounce back from two successive defeats against the Gunners - who have endured a mixed start to the campaign.

Hasselbaink - who played for Leeds from 1997 until 1999 - has backed his former side to stay in the Premier League this season, but has identified the area that needs to be improved.

"Leeds are a breath of fresh air for the Premier League. They play the kind of football where you need a lot of energy and not a lot of people can cope with them," Hasselbaink said, speaking exclusively to Ladbrokes at its launch of the 5-A-Side Bet on Leeds v Arsenal.

"But they do play a style which leaves them very open to their opposition, and that has shown on a few occasions already this season.

"They're very good against teams who say 'come on then, let's play football' - it suits them well and they normally take points from those games. But they have it harder against teams that sit in and counter, like Crystal Palace, Leicester and Wolves.

"They struggle because they don't keep people behind the ball. Sometimes they attack with seven players and it leaves them in trouble at the back.

"For me it's important that they maintain their Premier League status this season - that's all.

"If they finish 17th, it's a good season. They've spent nearly £100m but it doesn't really say a lot these days.

"You have to spend that money to give yourself a chance. I think they'll be safe quite because simply there are worse teams in the league.

The Dutchman continued: "The Leeds I left in 1999, you'd have never expected to see the journey they had for the next 20 years.

"The year after I left they were in the Champions League, they were spending money. Then in 2004 they went down and didn't return for 16 years.

"I followed them quite a bit over the last two seasons and they were absolutely the best team.

"For two years in that division they were the best team by far. They had a very bad end to their season the year they didn't go up, losing games they shouldn't have lost - but they've played the best football in that division for two years, so it wasn't a surprise at all for me to see them getting promoted."
