Former President Jimmy Carter was admitted to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta Monday evening for a procedure to "relieve pressure on his brain, caused by bleeding due to his recent falls," the Carter Center said in a statement.
Background: Carter was treated in the hospital last month for a pelvic fracture sustained in a fall at his home in Plains, Georgia. In May, Carter broke his hip after falling in his home.
- In 2015, he was treated for brain cancer. Carter announced in December of that year that the cancer had gone.

The big picture: Carter served as the 39th president of the U.S. from 1977 until 1981. He is the oldest living U.S. president and celebrated his 95th birthday last month.
