Jimmy Anderson suffers torn calf - but should be ready for first Ashes Test

England remain hopeful of having James Anderson fit to lead their Ashes attack after confirming he suffered a torn calf playing for Lancashire.

The good news is that it is a 'low grade' muscle tear and although he will now sit out Lancashire next two Championship matches, there is a chance he could feature in England's maiden Test against Ireland on July 24 at Lord's.

The first Ashes Test begins at Edgbaston on August 1 and depending on his rehab with the England and Lancs medics, Anderson could be saved for that game should Ireland come a touch too soon.

Anderson, who was spotted at Wimbledon along with several England players at the weekend, will be 37 by the time the Ashes starts which will make injuries harder to get over than when he was younger.

But he is blessed with a lean physique and a low impact action which has helped him remain at the top of the game for so long and this season already he has taken 30 wickets in six Championship games.

The England camp are understood to be confident of having the country's leading wicket taker back and available for the start of their Ashes campaign with greater fitness concerns over those who have been the mainstay of their World Cup adventure.
