Jimmy Anderson became the 12th man to reach the milestone of 400 Test wickets on Friday when he dismissed Martin Guptill on the delayed first day of the second Test at Headingley.
After the start was put back until after lunch due to heavy rain in Leeds, England won the toss and put New Zealand in, with the Lancashire paceman striking with his eighth ball of the day when Black Caps’ opener Martin Guptill was caught at second slip by Ian Bell.
He joins an exclusive list of bowlers to have amassed 400 wickets and the first Englishman. Last month, Anderson moved past Sir Ian Botham’s long-standing England record of 383 Test wickets after dismissing West Indies’ Marlon Samuels and Dinesh Ramdin on the final day of the first Test in Antigua.
The players were immediately forced off by rain but returned within minutes. New batsman Kane Williamson defended one ball from Anderson but edged his second ball to wicketkeeper Jos Buttler to give Anderson his 401st scalp.
