Jimmie Johnson Withdraws From Chicago NASCAR Race After In-Laws Found Dead

Jimmie Johnson will miss NASCAR’s Cup Series Race in Chicago this weekend after his in-laws were found dead in Oklahoma on Monday.

Fox23 News in Oklahoma reported that Muskogee police suspect Terry Janway shot and killed her husband, Jack Janway; her grandson, 11 year-old Dalton Janway; and herself Monday night. Chandra Johnson, Terry and Jack’s daughter, is Jimmie Johnson’s wife of almost two decades, with whom he has two kids.

According to the report, police say they got a 9-1-1 call at around 9 p.m. local time from a woman who they believe was Terry, and once officers arrived on the scene, they found someone laying in the hallway near the front door. Police said there were two more gunshots inside the house, and, after searching the home, two more people were found dead.

Police say they are investigating the incident as a murder-suicide and do not believe there are any more threats to the community.

Legacy Motor Club, Johnson’s professional stock car racing team, confirmed that Johnson has decided not to race this weekend.

“The Johnson family has asked for privacy at this time and no further statements will be made,” it said in a statement.

NASCAR also released a statement lending its support to Johnson and his family.

“We are saddened by the tragic deaths of members of Chandra Johnson’s family,” the statement said. “The entire NASCAR family extends its deepest support and condolences during this difficult time to Chandra, Jimmie and the entire Johnson and Janway families.”
