Jim White rails against Rangers claim as he uses Steven Gerrard's words to shut down Liverpool 'stepping stone' verdict

Broadcaster Jim White believes speculation linking Steven Gerrard with a Liverpool return is undervaluing his affinity with current club Rangers.

The Sky Sports presenter is adamant the Anfield icon has plenty left to achieve in Glasgow with the Ibrox side on the verge of a first Premiership title in a decade.

And the 64-year-old was left unconvinced when on-air sparring partner Simon Jordan claimed "it will be universally accepted that perhaps Rangers will be a stepping stone for Steven Gerrard."

But White, speaking on his talkSPORT morning show, responded: "You know what, whenever that subject is brought up he always says 'sorry, nope, you're wrong, this job is everything to me."

But former Crystal Palace owner Jordan isn't convinced anything would get in Gerrard's way if Liverpool came calling.

He added: "Let's have it right, Jurgen Klopp leaves Liverpool next month and Steven Gerrard is offered the job, is he going to turn around and say 'I'm staying at Rangers'.

"He will be out the door quicker than a quick thing from quickland. He will be going to Liverpool."

Jordan believes Gerrard has done a good job since heading to Ibrox in 2018 but believes there was also a level of expectation that he would be able to see off Celtic.

And the businessman insists the capitulation from Glasgow's east end has made a potentially nerve-shredding campaign a stroll in the park.

He said: "The reality of where is right now if he is doing a job, when Rangers gave him a contract to 2024, please don't tell me that was an expectation that they were going to continue to finish second.

"Steven Gerrard has done the job that Rangers brought him in to do. They have given him the tools to do it.

"I am in the camp he has done the job he was brought into do.

"At the same time he has the added benefit, with due respect, to see a marked decline in Celtic so he has capitalised on that, he has done the job he was brought into do.

"He wasn't brought into to make Rangers finish second any longer."
