Jim Tomsula says Montez Sweat is ‘freakish’

The top position group on the Washington Redkins is undoubtedly the defensive line, with youth and speed spread across the front three.

In 2018, Daron Payne joined former Alabama teammate Jonathan Allen, as well as veteran Matt Ioannidis to help form a strong front line. Now, in 2019, rookie Montez Sweat will be joining the ranks, and his production is highly anticipated.

“Physically? Yeah, it’s freakish,” said defensive line coach Jim Tomsula, via The Washington Post. “I mean, you know the stuff you saw on college tape, the stuff you saw in workouts; I mean, you don’t hide 4.4 speed. You don’t hide that height; you don’t hide that length.”

Sweat put up impressive stats in college, with 22.5 sacks. Now he will join a defensive line that has already made a name for itself in the NFL. In 2018, the Redskins were tied for 10th in rushing touchdowns allowed, with just 12 in the entire season. Sweat’s 6-foot-6, 240-pound frame will do nicely filling holes inside.

“He’s been an impressive young man, very impressive,” Tomsula said. “It’s still early, but he seems to be a built-right type of person with his DNA; he seems to have a good head on his shoulders. Obviously, somebody has done a good job with him growing up.”
