Jim Tomsula is lighting a fire under the Redskins’ defensive line

Throughout the years in Washington, the Redskins’ defensive line has been one of the few position units that have continued to find success, though the injury bug has tried to disrupt it at times.

This season, D-line coach Jim Tomsula is re-lighting the fire under the players up front, and they seem to be taking to his type of coaching.

“He coaches us hard and he loves us hard, too.” Defensive lineman Daron Payne said, via Redskins.com. “There’s not a day that goes by that he’s not excited, so I know every day he’s going to make us compete.”

Tomsula was hired by the Redskins in 2017, and since then the defensive front has soared. One of the reasons for that success is Tomsula’s energetic style of coaching and the fact that he loves to come to work each and every day.

“We’re going to compete against each other and we want the best out of each other, but he’s always right there encouraging us,” said Payne.

Payne has already vowed to win a sacks and tackles competition this season, and if the rest of the line shows up with the same intensity, the Redskins will be run-stoppers in 2019.
