Jim the Janny's brilliant virtual bar brings Scots weirdest and wonderful lockdown entertainment

A school janitor’s virtual bar is keeping thousands of Scots entertained during the coronavirus lockdown.

Dundee’s Jimmy Young, aka Jim the Janny, is bringing people together from around the world with weird and wonderful content while we’re holed up.

From rainbow lizards to singing dogs and folk showing off their musical talents, the janny’s joint is jumping.

The 54-year-old Dundonian set-up his Facebook bar last weekend after Boris Johnson announced the closure of pubs around Britain.

The dad-of-three said: “I usually meet up with my pals on a Saturday and Sunday, so this would be a big loss to me.

“After having a wee think and speaking to people online, I set up my virtual bar. I just wanted to make the best of a bad situation.

“My plan was to get a few of my pals to join. I thought we could get our own carry oots and log on and have a wee drink and a wee song, I did not think it was going to take off the way it has.”

In less than a week, Jimmy has built up 9000 members and has people from around the world contributing.

He said: “I’m in shock at how popular it is. We’re loving it. It’s giving myself and the group members something to do while we’re stuck in the house.

“As well as people coming on to have a chat, sing a wee song or play a tune, we’re also offering to help people who need it at this difficult time.”

As well as the fun stuff, Jimmy revealed some of his Facebook members have tested positive for the coronavirus and are keeping the rest up to date with how they’re doing and what happens when you have this virus.

He said: “The bottom line is we all just want to make sure everyone is alright and to give people who are isolating some lighthearted fun. That’s what it’s all about.”
