Jim McLean dead aged 83 as Dundee United legend passes away following dementia battle

Dundee United legend Jim McLean has died aged 83.

The iconic former Tannadice boss passed away on Boxing Day, it has been announced.

Larkhall-born McLean, also a former Record Sport columnist, had been living with dementia and was residing in a Dundee care home during his final days.

A titan of Scottish football, McLean managed Dundee United for 22 years from 1971 to 1993, becoming the most successful manager in the club's history.

He spearheaded a golden era of success in the 1980s, winning two League Cups in 1980 and 1981 before a league title followed in 1983.

Winning the league catapulted United into the European Cup where they reached the semi-final before losing out to Roma in controversial circumstances.

Undeterred, McLean took another crack at continental competition and his team famously beat Barcelona and Borussia Monchengladbach on a memorable 1986 run to the UEFA Cup Final.

United eventually lost out to IFK Gothenburg in a two-legged final but McLean's place in Scottish football's pantheon of greats was already secure.

McLean served a dual role as United chairman from 1984 and retained the position for a further seven years after stepping down as boss in 1993.

His commitment to the club was underlined in rebuffing the advances of both Rangers and Newcastle United to remain on Tayside.

While best known as a manager, McLean enjoyed a 14-year playing career with Hamilton Accies, Clyde, Dundee and Kilmarnock.

Away from the dugout, he wrote a hard-hitting column in this very newspaper for the best part of a decade.
