Jim Harbaugh takes jab at former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer

By all accounts and measures, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh’s record against Urban Meyer’s Ohio State squad is embarrassing. Despite being pegged as the savior of a Wolverine program that had slipped into mediocrity, he went 0-4 against Meyer’s teams, and even when favored last year, lost in a landslide by the score of 62-39.

Unless Meyer comes out of retirement, Harbaugh will finish 0 for eternity against the legendary coach.

But that didn’t stop Harbaugh from giving a bit of an underhanded compliment to Meyer. While appearing on the TK Show podcast with Tim Kawakami, captain khakis was asked about that albatross of a record he has against Meyer.

“Urban Meyer’s had a winning record. A really phenomenal record everywhere he’s been,” Harbaugh said. “But also, controversy follows everywhere he’s been.”

Ouch. To be fair, there has been controversy with Meyer whether it was self-inflicted or not. The fact that Harbaugh went there will leave a lot to be desired for Ohio State fans and brass. In fact, it sounds an awful lot like sour grapes.

Harbaugh went on appeared to dial back those comments back a little later in the interview.

“All you can be judged on is your record. What your record is overall. What your record is within your conference. What your record is with head-to-head matchups,” Harbaugh told Kawakami. “I think you’ll find Ohio State is the only team with a better record, a better conference record than us (since I’ve been there) and has a better head-to-head matchup with us.”

“Our goal, we have two. Win multiple championships and run a first-class program. That’s what we aspire to. We’re learning and you take accountability and you learn from it. Hope springs eternal and we’re fired up for this season going forward.”

It should be an interesting Big Ten Media Days appearance for Harbaugh on Friday. Stay tuned …
