Jim Goodwin says it was a 'pleasure' to have St Mirren fans back and hopes capacity will increase soon

Jim Goodwin was delighted to see his players greeted by Buddies supporters as they were welcomed onto the pitch by fans for the first time in 489 days.

Just 500 lucky Saints fans were allowed into the SMISA Stadium for Tuesday night’s comfortable 1-0 Premier Sports Cup win over Dunfermline.

St Mirren boss Goodwin was over the moon to see fans back in the Paisley side’s home ground and only wishes his side could have given them a few more goals to shout about.

He said: “I have to thank the supporters. It was great to have them back and I look forward to seeing them in even greater numbers in the not too distant future.

“The players were talking about it in the build-up to the game, about just how excited they were to have fans back cheering them on.

“It felt at times that there was more than just 500 in here. It was an absolute pleasure to have them back.

“The supporters showed their appreciation at the end as well for what they saw in the second half especially.

“I’m glad we gave them a good performance, although I would have liked to have given them a few more goals to cheer about.”
