Jim Goodwin reveals tactical mistake that cost St Mirren win at Hibs

Jim Goodwin admits St Mirren should have taken their foot off the gas after allowing Hibs to capitalise on their eagerness to attack.

The visitors were caught on the break as they looked to keep pressing up the pitch despite having amassed a two-goal lead.

And manager Goodwin feels he should have told his buzzing side to settle down after surging into the lead so quickly.

He told Express Sport: “We started the game really well. We went out to try and press Hibs high up the pitch and we did that. The boys were full of energy and forced them into mistakes.

“I was delighted to get a goal in front, let alone two up and they were well-worked goals.

“In hindsight, I’m kind of kicking myself because I’m thinking maybe we should have just came off the game for five minutes after going two in front.

“We didn’t, we went and pressed high again and let Scott Allan get into that pocket of space between our backline and midfield and that’s what leads to the first goal.

“It’s avoidable and then the second comes from giving the ball away cheaply. I can’t help but have a bit of disappointment and frustration that we’ve dropped a couple of points.”

Next up for St Mirren is a huge clash with Hamilton on Wednesday night.
