St Mirren fans don’t need to worry about their club joining the controversial European Super League anytime soon.
That’s according to manager Jim Goodwin, who believes the Buddies are highly unlikely to be invited to the proposed breakaway competition that’s set to feature some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
News of the Super League’s formation has rocked the football fraternity, with UEFA and FIFA strongly against the idea, with both threatening to stop players involved featuring in international matches - among numerous other sanctions.
Reacting to the news, St Mirren manager Goodwin said: “It doesn’t sit well with me, being honest.
“I’m a Liverpool fan, that’s who I grew up supporting and I’m gutted to think they might not be involved in the Premier League in years to come.
“I don’t know the ins and outs. They might try to keep playing in the league and have this on the side, in a Champions League-style format.
“The clubs are entitled to make money, but it shouldn’t impact the domestic game.
“Unfortunately it’s all about the money at the end of the day, that’s the reality.
“In terms of us, I don’t think our fans have anything to worry about. I don’t think we’ll be getting an invite to the Super League.
“Our club is massive in the community. We have constant discussions here about how we can engage with our supporters, this year more than ever.
"We’re proud of being a community club.”
