Jim Goodwin reacts to Rangers claims as St Mirren boss wants tough crackdown on any alleged rule breakers

Jim Goodwin insists ignorance is no longer an excuse for football’s Covidiots who put the sport in jeopardy.

The St Mirren boss believes any players breaching lockdown restrictions must face severe consequences as Rangers launched an internal investigation after a weekend party was broken up by police.

No indoor mixing of households is allowed in Scotland and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was again forced to verbally censure our game which she’s threatened to pull the plug on due to a string of Covid-19 breaches.

But Goodwin believes the time has come to hammer the culprits who have no case for their defence.

He said: “It’s really disappointing to hear what’s gone on over the weekend.

“I don’t hold Steven Gerrard or Rangers Football Club responsible for this. The people involved in it need to take full accountability for their actions.

“No doubt Rangers will punish them financially and take as much money off them as possible.

“And no doubt the SFA and SPFL will step in and dish out the suspensions required.”

Goodwin also has sympathy for Light Blues counterpart Gerrard for the alleged poor conduct of some of his players but he’s wary of patience being lost by the Scottish Government.

He said: “The last thing any of us want is the government stepping in and cancelling football.

“There’s a lot of young men in the dressing room, a lot of teenagers who are very similar to the rest of the young population who are missing their pals, they are missing their nights out. They are all having big birthdays — 18ths, 21st — and they are missing out on celebrating it. That’s just part and parcel of life for everyone at the moment.

“Footballers and staff involved in football just need to be understanding of the situation.”
