Jim Goodwin praises St Mirren for unlocking 10-man Dons to seal first Premiership win

St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin was delighted with his side’s comeback 3-2 win against 10-man Aberdeen.

On-loan Wolves midfielder Connor Ronan scored twice before former Aberdeen striker Curtis Main glanced home the winner with the slightest of touches from a looped Marcus Fraser cross.

Goodwin was full of praise for his Saints squad who claimed their first league victory since April against Ross County.

The Buddies gaffer said: “We had to work hard for that win.

“I thought we started really well and deservedly went in front.

“The middle part of the first half was a little bit disjointed from our point of view.

“We didn’t quite get to grips with some of Aberdeen’s movement, particularly Ryan Hedges dropping into the midfield to create an overload.

“We managed to sort that at half-time.

“Unfortunately we found ourselves going in front and then falling behind similar to last weekend.

“That’s something we’re going to have to address as we can’t continuously keep coming from behind to get a point or three.”

Goodwin was not sure that the free kick for the second Aberdeen goal should have stood, instead he argued the foul should have been given the other way.

But in the end the Irishman was full of praise for the way his St Mirren charges stuck together and saw out the three points against Stephen Glass’ Dons.

He said: “The second goal for Aberdeen should have been a foul in our favour.

“There was a clear block at the back post and you would hope the linesman would spot that.

“But we showed great character not to let the heads go down.

“I thought we managed the game really well in the second half.

“People will rightly point out we were playing against 10 men, but it’s never easy to break down 10 men if they’re sitting with two banks of four.

“The boys had to be patient and wait for the gaps to appear.

“Thankfully for us they did.”
