St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin reckons this year’s Scottish Cup should be scrapped to avoid fixture chaos.
Record Sport exclusively revealed how SFA chiefs were holding crisis talks over this season’s competition which has fallen way behind schedule due to the suspension of the lower leagues.
A pile-up of ties has left 44 teams still in the running for 32 third round places which were originally scheduled for last weekend.
Contingency plans to save the competition include cramming three rounds of the competition into a window in April - should lockdown restrictions be lifted.
Another scenario would see the nation’s showpiece competition held over until next season.
But Goodwin - whose St Mirren side are due to play Hamilton in the third round - reckons the only logical solution is to write-off the remainder of the competition and start afresh next season.
He said: “The Scottish Cup is one we all really enjoy and of course we would love to be able to get it played but, just thinking with my sensible hat on, I don’t see where we can squeeze that competition into the calendar.
“We already have eight games in the month of February and there’s nowhere to fit it in this month so I just can’t see how we can do it
“Unless we do it without some of the lower league teams but I don’t think that would be fair either.
“Personally, I can’t see it happening. If SFA decide that we can fit it in then great: let’s do it.
“But what I think is there won’t be a Scottish Cup this season – they’ll just have to write it off, it’s as simple as that."
