Jim Goodwin doubles down on Celtic Greg Taylor verdict as boss issues St Mirren penalty warning

St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin has doubled down on claims that Celtic's penalty was erroneously awarded in midweek - and insists he is telling his players not to do the same.

The Hoops ran out 4-0 winners in midweek but their crucial second came from an Odsonne Edouard penalty after Greg Taylor went down in the box.

The Buddies boss was left raging by the decision and reckons managers in Scotland shouldn't simply accept soft fouls for spot-kick awards.

He insists he has warned the Paisley players against taking a similar tumble under minimal contact in the area.

He told Sportsound ahead of the clash with Aberdeen: “I’ve been criticised recently for my comments regarding penalties and what I did say in my conference on Thursdays as well is that I’m honest enough to say we have had a couple of soft penalties as well.

“I wouldn’t say they are dives. Yes, we had one against Motherwell that there was a bit of contact on Lee [Erwin] from [Bevis] Mugabi, but ‘m not encouraging my players to do that either.

“There are players going down at the minute, and there will be people listening telling me to shut up because it’s part of the parcel of the game, but it doesn’t have to be part of the parcel of the game.

“If penalties are legitimate and somebody gets wiped out in the box, or the goalkeeper comes charging out, that’s completely different.

Greg Taylor went down under pressure from Ryan Flynn (SNS Group)

“But falling over in the box with the slightest bit of contact is running the game in my opinion.

“As I said, I will be encouraging my players not do it, and I hope other managers will do the same with their own.”

BBC pundit Michael Stewart has defended the Celtic full-back over claims he went down too easily to win the penalty on Sportscene, and Goodwin bit back as he insisted there should be a TV compilation of all similar flashpoints this season.

He went on: “I watched the show with Michael and Craig Gordon and I thought their analysis of the incident was very similar to mine.

“I would have to argue that I don’t think the contact from Flynn merited Taylor going over in the fashion that he did.

“I could stand here and name another dozen players who go over very easily. You only have to watch some of the penalties back, maybe the guys on Sportscene could do a compilation of that. It creates debate, there is no doubt about it.”
