Jim Goodwin defends St Mirren tactics despite narrow Rangers defeat

St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin stuck by his defensive game plan as the Saints suffered another defeat at the hands of the Old Firm.

The Saints lined up in a 5-4-1 formation to try and frustrate Rangers before trying to nick a goal on the break.

And despite losing his fourth game against Celtic and Rangers this season, the gaffer is adamant his tactics were justified.

Goodwin told Express Sport: “The game plan was up to me and the players delivered it and stuck to it.

“If there’s any negativity to come my way because of that that’s fine, but I thought the formation and the system was justified.

“I thought the shape of the team was very good. We finished the league campaign really well before the winter break and had a decent performance on Saturday against Broxburn.

“I was hoping we could stay in the game as long as we could at 0-0 and then nick it towards the end.

“If you do come out and commit too many bodies forward then Rangers are extremely dangerous on the counter-attack.

“They can pick you off and score at will.”
