Jim Goodwin defends Charlie Mulgrew over Scott Brown tribute night as disgruntled Dundee United fans told to 'relax'

Jim Goodwin has defended Dundee United stopper Charlie Mulgrew over criticism from fans of the relegation-threatened Taysiders for agreeing to attend a Celtic charity function paying tribute to his ex-Hoops team-mates Scott Brown and Mikael Lustig.

Celtic announced that Mulgrew would be gong to the function - A Night With Scott Brown and Mikael Lustig - at the OVO Hyrdo in Glasgow on Thursday night. It comes less than 48 hours before Goodwin’s Tangerines kick off against Livingston in the first of three games that will determine their Scottish Premiership fate.

Dundee United are rooted to the bottom of the top flight table and have lost their last two games. That has resulted in a bit of a social media backlash against veteran stopper Mulgrew who was suspended for the defeat to Ross County last weekend following his red card against St Johnstone but is available for the trip to west Lothian.

Many supporters are looking to Mulgrew’s experience to help guide them out of their current situation but Goodwin said: “I’m a little bit disappointed with the negative reaction to that. Charlie is going there to support an ex team-mate. It’s a charitable foundation and it’s a Thursday night, different if it was Friday and it’s not like he’s going to be out until all hours in the morning.

“Charlie’s going to go there and do a little bit of a Q&A along with Scott Brown. He won’t be hanging around too long. He’ll drive there and drive back, there will be no alcohol involved. People just need to relax a little bit and understand it’s for a good cause what Charlie’s doing.”
