Jim Goodwin sings Jak Alnwick's praises after flying start to St Mirren career

Jim Goodwin believes he’s got the two most important positions in his team well staffed this season.

St Mirren striker Jon Obika led the line well against Hamilton, picking up the vital winner in the opening 20 minutes.

At the other end, summer recruit Jak Alnwick again impressed between the sticks, making a number of crucial saves to keep the Saints ahead.

And Goodwin is delighted he’s got two vital parts of his side organised for the campaign ahead.

He said: “We had Jak Alnwick on the radar since January because we had a bit of interest from abroad for Vaclav Hladky and we weren’t sure if the big man wanted to stay.

“Thankfully Hladky saw out the season but we were going to make a move for Jak in that period. Without being disrespectful to the rest of the players in the team, your two most important positions are your goalkeeper and striker.

“Obika scored 12 last year and this year we’re hoping for 15, maybe 20 from him.

“And if you’ve got a goalkeeper at the other end who can save you valuable points, it’s a great place to start from.

”We knew the qualities we were getting, that’s why we worked so hard to get him in. His distribution off the deck is incredible but some of his shot stopping saves he’s made are incredible.

"They’ve made the three points today because without a great goalkeeper it could have been two points dropped or all three.
