Jim Goodwin backs new striker to solve St Mirren's goalscoring dilemma

Jim Goodwin has backed new striker Seifedin Chabbi to be the proven goalscorer St Mirren have been crying out for all season.

The former Sturm Graz and SV Reid forward was in the stand to watch his new side battle to an entertaining 2-2 draw with Hibs at Easter Road.

And Buddies boss Goodwin believes the powerful 26-year-old can provide the goals his team have been craving, having already built up a fruitful partnership with St Mirren winger Ilkay Durmus at SV Reid.

He said: “You can see we went all out in the attacking options in the window, because goals have been an issue for us. Defensively, we’ve been solid.

“I was delighted to get the three done early doors but we still needed to try and add more quality at that top end.

“With Alex coming in and Seifedin as well, I think we’ve managed that.

“Chabbi is a really exciting one for us. He’s a proven goalscorer.

“He played in the same team with Ilkay Durmus so they’ve already got a relationship built up. Ilkay assisted about ten of his 22 goals one season a couple of years ago in Austria.

“We’re excited to see how that pans out.”

Jakubiak made his debut as a second-half substitute for Saints on Saturday afternoon, with Goodwin revealing Chabbi joined in training yesterday and will be available to face Hamilton tomorrow night.

And the gaffer fired a warning shot to his misfiring strikers that they have serious competition for places now at the top of the pitch.

He said: “We’re in a good place and the January transfer window has been brilliant for us.

“We’re coming out of it in a stronger position than where we were at the start of it.

“I felt we didn’t have enough options up front before but now I’ve got about six strikers which is quite incredible.

“There won’t be many teams in the Premiership that will have those kind of options
available. There’s no more excuses.”
