Jim Gavin set to be awarded Freedom of the City by Dublin City Council

Dublin City Council will vote on whether to give Jim Gavin Freedom of the City.

Gavin guided the Dubs to a historic five consecutive All-Ireland titles after they beat Kerry in a final replay this month.

The 48-year-old is widely regarded as one of football's greatest ever managers and councillors will vote at a meeting tonight to honour him with the Freedom of the City, the Irish Independent reports.

A clean sweep of votes in his favour would then see Gavin approached to see if he would accept the honour.

A special meeting of the council would be organised to present him with the privilege.

The move is being proposed by Lord Mayor Paul McAuliffe according to council sources.

Kevin Heffernan was the last Dublin boss to be honoured with the Freedom of the City in 2004.

The Freedom of the City law dates back to 1454 and amongst other rights, would allow Gavin to graze sheep on St. Stephen's Green and College Green.
