Jim Gavin reveals he would love to see Diarmuid Connolly return for the drive for five

Jim Gavin has revealed he would love to see Diarmuid Connolly return to the Dublin fold for their drive for five.

The controversial playmaker missed most of the 2016 championship campaign through suspension and spent last summer playing football in the US.

But Connolly could be poised to follow Rory O'Carroll back into the panel as the Blues chase a record fifth All-Ireland title in a row.

Dubs boss Gavin said: "We've gone to war with Diarmuid on the playing-field over many, many years, an outstanding player.

"Of course, Dublin supporters and myself would love to see him back."

"Diarmuid, like a lot of players, make choices and some players decide to put themselves forward for the county squads and some players don't.

"A bit like Paul Flynn taking a bow out from the intercounty scene (this week).

Jim Gavin tells Rory O'Carroll that he must fight for his place in Dublin panel

"I respect those choices. We'd love to have some of those players involved, but at the moment they're not, so who knows as the weeks progress?

"Over the coming week, we’ll be inviting players in that have never represented the Dublin senior football team before, into our training, because they have performed consistently well in the club leagues and the club championship.

“I’m in conversation with a lot of players who aren’t on the squad. There’s ongoing conversations with a whole host of players.

“Like any player there, if a player is playing well with their club and they’re interested to come back in and to commit themselves to senior inter-county football, well obviously we’re interested".
