Jim Gavin hints at staying on as Dublin manager for a shot at six-in-a-row

Boss Jim Gavin added to Dublin’s joy last night with a broad hint that he’ll be back for a shot at six-in-a-row.

Various figures suggested the Dublin manager could step down after the Championship – despite having a deal until the end of 2021.

Gavin said he’ll take time out to reflect but indicated that he’s going nowhere – admitting five-in-a-row doesn’t feel like the end.

Gavin said: “No, I can’t say it does for me.

“I have committed to next year so we’ll reflect in a couple of weeks’ time.”

Dublin fans will be praying the six-time All-Ireland winning boss sticks around for an eighth season in charge at least.

Gavin said of his future: “You’re excited to see this today and to look at the horizon but that’s probably for another day. I’m not going to get into it now. I’ll sit down with the county board as I always do to review it.

“I also have a profession outside of this role that I’ve been asked to do for Dublin GAA and I obviously have family commitments as well. That all goes into the mix.”

Bernard Brogan, 35, was an unused sub and is almost certain to call it quits while a string of others including Eoghan O’Gara could retire.

Gavin paid special tribute to O’Gara and said: “Eoghan, who didn’t get much game time this year, has been phenomenal as a leader in that dressing-room. The same with Rory O’Carroll, phenomenal.”

Eoin Murchan is among a group of players with his best years ahead of him and his wondergoal was central to Dublin’s win.

Gavin said: “It was a great set move from the throw-in, really well executed by the team collectively you’d have to say. I’ve seen it before from him so I don’t think anybody was surprised when it hit the net. Eoin did really well, he really committed himself. It is what you see from the players when you are with them that often.”
