Jim Crawford excited to work with Ryan Johansson and John Joe Patrick Finn as Ireland under-21s head to Spain

Ireland under-21 boss Jim Crawford has expressed his delight that he'll finally get to work with Spanish-based Ryan Johansson and John Joe Patrick Finn during the upcoming three-game window.

And Crawford, who has seen Andrew Omobamidele and Danny Mandroiu promoted this week from his squad to Stephen Kenny's senior panel, believes they can thrive in that environment.

The under-21s will play Switzerland, Australia and Denmark in a tournament in Spain and included among the seven new players called up are Sevilla's Johansson and Finn, who plays for Getafe.

Johansson, 20, recently announced he had become eligible for Ireland after he had previously played underage for Luxembourg.

"I'd seen him play for the under-19s and I thought he'd done really well, he's certainly one to keep an eye on," said Crawford.

"He had that move from Bayern Munich to Sevilla, which is phenomenal in this day and age, to get a six-year deal for someone so young.

"He's a fantastic fella. He's somebody that I've spoken to about a year and a half ago.

"I reached out to him to see how he was getting on and how he was enjoying his football, and it dawned on me there when I first got the job that he would be somebody that I'd love involved in the group.

"So I rang him and he was very excited about it, we started getting the process underway and I have to take my hat off to everyone in the association in the background, they got it done very quick and he was delighted.

"I'm sure you saw his interview, how passionate he is to play with Ireland, and that's exactly the same type of tone I got from him over the phone, that he'd love to play for Ireland and put on that green jersey.

"He's an exceptionally bright boy, a very good footballer and again I'm excited to work with him, too.

"There was a little bit of doubt about his fitness but I rang him and we had a long conversation about it.

"He said he was fine because he had a hamstring issue but he's fine now and our medical team has spoken to their medical team and we're good to go, I'm looking forward to meeting him on Thursday."

Finn is also included after missing out previously through injury, although his time with the squad is likely to be limited due to upcoming exams for a place in third level.

"For the last camp we had discussions with his mom and the club and obviously he hurt his ankle and missed out on that," said Crawford.

"But he's ready to come into this camp, which is great. The only thing is he's got exams, he's 17 years old.

"So it's a conversation that we'll have with him when he comes in, to sort of see where he's at with his exams because certainly myself and the rest of the staff would be for education.

"If he comes in, trains, plays a game and then he can go home and prepare for his exams for university...it was something that just came across my desk yesterday from his mom, so it's certainly something that we'll look into.

"Other than that he's fit and he's looking forward to coming in. That's important, to come in and see the group, meet the players, meet the staff and we can get a look at him as well.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing him, I have to say. It feels like it's been a long time since the episode started but it will be great."

Omobamidele has earned a spot in the senior Ireland squad for the upcoming friendlies against Andorra and Hungary on the back of an impressive run in the Norwich City side that has earned promotion to the Premier League.

"I've been watching Andrew a long time now and he's a fantastic talent, an excellent centre-half," said Crawford.

"We played him as the left-sided centre-half against Wales because he's comfortable with both feet.

"He's confident stepping into the game, his decision-making on the ball has always been excellent with Norwich, whether it's been '18s or '23s and now Norwich's first team.

"So I knew what we were getting coming into camp. He's an excellent player but I got to know him and he's also a fantastic person - hard working, wants to learn and I was really impressed with him.

"I rang him and congratulated him on his call-up and it's exciting for him, it really is, and he'll take it in his stride. He's a very level-headed character, too, but he's got enormous potential and I'm over the moon for him."

Mandroiu has also made the step up after an outstanding start to the Premier Division season with Shamrock Rovers, the club he joined after a difficult final season with Bohemians.

"I was working with Dan when I was obviously the under-21s assistant and when I became head coach he was always someone who I wanted in the squad, although at that time he wasn't getting into the Bohemians team," said Crawford.

"But I still knew that the pictures that he sees, the passes that he makes, his goal-scoring threat, his set-pieces, he's outstanding, he's a real quality player and I was absolutely delighted for him.

"I've seen him play a few times this year and he's been excellent.

"I think I'm excited with regards to his potential, because we don't have too many number 10s and he's a fella that can open doors for the senior team.

"And I think he'll be desperate to play and show people what he can do at that level.

"So I'm excited, delighted, another really good fella and I wish him the best in his international career and his club career."
