Jim Chapman lifts the lid on Clyde exit admitting axe was a 'weight off my shoulders'

Jim Chapman has opened up on his controversial exit from Clyde for the first time revealing the departure was a "weight off my shoulders."

The former Albion Rovers gaffer left Annan to join The Bully Wee in May 2017 but was axed just six months later.

With the club sitting third bottom of League Two at the time Chapman left Broadwood just days after a heated exchange with fans following defeat to Elgin.

Chapman, who is now coaching the University of Kentucky's Women's Team, admits it was a tough spell for him having left The Galabankies after reaching the play-off spots.

However, he says he was was pleased to see Danny Lennon lead the club to League One after taking the reins.

Speaking to the Down The Divisions podcast regarding the move from Annan to Clyde Chapman said: "It was a challenge that I thought was great and there was potentially a big club there.

"Traditionally it's a great club. It could be better where they are, and the resources that should be there should be able to take that club forward.

"But reputation means nothing. They went through massive period of change and [I thought I] came in at the right time; what a fantastic opportunity this would be.

"But there were a lot of fires that needed to be put out. The chairman had said this is where we want to go, but then a lot of changes happen, and when you don't get results then the inevitable happens.

"Am I disappointed with how it ended? I don't mind saying yes, but it was a massive weight off my shoulders with the way things were going.

"There was no surprise to me when Danny came in and done great; galvanised the players and picked it up and ran with it.

"I don't have any bitterness about me and it was great to see them going, because that is where I believed they could go.

"I knew Clyde could get out of Division Three [League Two] to Division Two [League One] and start to progress towards the Championship as well.

Clyde manager Danny Lennon (SNS Group)

"I'm pleased to see it happening, albeit I wish I had got more time to see it myself, but it just shows part of me was right to go, but the disappointing part was I didn't get enough time myself.

"Whether that was deserved or wasn't deserved is other people's opinions."

Chapman was appearing on the Down The Divisions podcast, which is out every Friday on all podcast players.
