Jim Caldwell doesn't take issue with Odell Beckham block on Jarrad Davis

Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell did not take issue with a block by New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. that helped land rookie linebacker Jarrad Davis in the NFL's concussion protocol.

"It was a block," Caldwell said at his news conference Tuesday.

Asked if he thought the block was illegal or dirty, Caldwell said, "There was no flag thrown."

Davis suffered a brain injury in the fourth quarter of Monday's 24-10 win over the Giants when he dove head-first into running back Paul Perkins' leg while making a tackle.

Beckham blocked Davis in his left shoulder as Davis lunged toward Perkins.

Davis, the Lions' starting middle linebacker and first-round pick, held his helmet with both hands as he lay on the ground before he was escorted to the sideline by trainers.

He declined an interview request in the locker room after the game as he remained in the concussion protocol.

Caldwell refused to say Tuesday whether the Lions would submit that play to the NFL for further evaluation.

"I believe that the officials do an outstanding job actually," Caldwell said. "When you go into a ballgame, players make the most mistakes, coaches make the second most and officials make the fewest, so they do the best they can."

Caldwell also declined to say if Davis still is dealing with concussion symptoms.

Players diagnosed with a concussion must be cleared by an independent neurologist before they're cleared to return to the field.

The Lions lost one other defensive starter to injury Monday, safety Tavon Wilson (shoulder). Running backs Dwayne Washington (quad) and Ameer Abdullah also left the game with leg injuries, though Abdullah said after the game he was fine.

The Lions are required to release their first injury report of the week on Wednesday.

"We'll do the same thing we always do," Caldwell said. "The fortunate thing is you guys won't have to wait as long to see the report. When it's Monday, you've got a couple days to wait. It's a treat."
