Jim Beglin apologises to Manchester City fans for 'Emptyhad' commentary gaffe

Former Republic of Ireland international Jim Beglin has apologised for an on-air error on Saturday that saw him called Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium the “Emptyhad.”

The one-time Liverpool and Shamrock Rovers star was doing co-commentary for BT Sport on the Citizens’ 1-0 win over Chelsea yesterday.

Pep Guardiola’s side moved 11 points clear in the title race thanks to the victory over the side that pipped them to the Champions League crown last May.

City did manage to pack a near-capacity 53,319 in for the top-of-the-table clash but have been criticised in recent years for their attendances while regularly winning titles.

This has led some fans of rival clubs to dub the stadium at Eastlands, which City moved to from Maine Road in 2003, the ‘Emptyhad.’

Unfortunately for Beglin, he appeared to get the terms muddled in his head and, though he apologised on air, he later made a similar error.

Beglin tweeted: “I have the greatest respect for Manchester City Football Club. In no way was my verbal error today intended to cause City fans any offence.”
