Jilted boyfriend, 33, jailed after trying to cut off love rival's penis

A man who tried to cut off his love-rival’s penis has been jailed for 20 years after being found guilty of attempted murder.

Victim Peter German told police James Cunliffe was "trying to chop his d**k off" after he was found at the home of Cunliffe's ex-girlfriend Shannon Mather.

The victim was stabbed seven times, suffering a punctured lung and injuries to his testicles, groin, head and arm.

Mr German, 45, told police: “He was trying to chop my d*** off, he was trying to cut me down there on purpose.

“When he stabbed me between the leg, I thought ‘this is real this, he is going to kill me’.”

A court heard 33-year-old Cunliffe had dated Miss Mather, 31, for two years but when they split he became jealous of her relationship with Mr German.

Gwen Henshaw, prosecuting, said: “The motive for this attack was jealously, fuelled by rage.”

She added: “The defendant was an embittered ex-boyfriend whilst the victim was the favoured partner, with both having ‘on-off’ relationships with Miss Mather.”

In March this year Cunliffe went to Miss Mather's home in Leigh, Greater Manchester, where he spotted Mr German.

He barged inside, grabbed a knife and attacked his rival.

He later fled to the home of a relative where he said: “I’ve just stabbed him up. I’m going to the shop for some cans, I’ll see you in 10 years.”

Cunliffe, from Leigh, was found guilty of attempted murder after a trial at Manchester crown court in November and was sentenced to 20 years behind bars.

He was also was given a life-long restraining order against the victim.

In mitigation his counsel Oliver Jarvis said: “This was to an extent a crime of passion. He just saw red, he deeply regrets his actions and he wishes to apologise.”

After the case, detective Sean Goddard said: “This was a violent and frenzied attack carried out in a fit of jealousy.”
