Jill Dando's brother has said her killer “struck lucky” ahead of a documentary about her murder outside her London home.
Ahead of the screening of The Murder of Jill Dando on BBC One on Tuesday night, Nigel Dando told the Lorraine Kelly Show that he doubted his sister’s killer will be found 20 years on from her death.
The 37-year-old was fatally shot on the doorstep of her home in Fulham on April 26, 1999.
Mr Dando told Ms Kelly: “As the weeks have turned into the months, and the months have turned into years, and the years have now turned into decades – and nobody has been convicted of Jill’s murder – I tend to think that it wasn’t a professional hit.
“I think you can rule out the Serbian hitman, a popular theory doing the rounds at the time.
"For what it’s worth, my belief is that it was just a misguided individual who was in that street on the day with a firearm, who knew where Jill lived and who just struck lucky.
“For whatever reason that person did what that person did, I doubt we will ever know now, because of that passage of time.”
Mr Dando spoke out ahead of the BBC documentary, airing at 9pm, in which family, friends and colleagues celebrate Ms Dando’s life and offer their insights on the circumstances surrounding her death.
Barry George's murder conviction was overturned in 2008, having spent eight years in jail.
