Jill Dando murder: BBC to mark 20 years since death with documentary including unseen footage

The BBC has announced a new documentary about the murder of Jill Dando to mark 20 years since her death.

The broadcaster will honour the memory of the late Crimewatch presenter who was shot and killed on her doorstep in April 1999.

The hour-long programme will feature unseen footage as it recounts the story behind one of the most high-profile unsolved murders for decades.

As well as the never-before-seen clips, the one-off programme will feature Ms Dando’s colleagues, friends and close family as well as members of the police who worked on the case.

It is unknown if the documentary will feature Barry George. Mr George was wrongly convicted of the killing and acquitted in 2008.

The film seeks to explore the forensics and the theories behind Ms Dando’s murder which still remains unsolved two decades on.

David Brindley, Head of Commissioning, Popular Factual and Factual Entertainment, said: “Jill was one of the BBC’s most talented and well-loved presenters.

“Her death sent shockwaves through the country and sparked one of the biggest investigations the Metropolitan Police had ever launched

“Twenty years on, with the crime still unsolved, this film will reveal in detail the process of that investigation from those who were closest to it.”

The Murder Of Jill Dando will air on BBC One later this year.
