Jihadi Jack's mum fears he could be killed if Turkey invades Kurdish-held Syria

Jihadi Jack's mum fears her son could be killed if Turkey invades north-east Syria, say reports.

Jack Letts' mother Sally Lane is worried the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an army dominated by the Kurds, could 'suddenly release' ISIS prisoners in the face of a Turkish offensive.

Turkish officials yesterday confirmed the country's military was on the brink of entering territory held by Kurdish fighters, who are deemed as 'terrorists' by Turkey.

Letts, 23, who left his Oxfordshire home to join the Islamic State in 2014, has been languishing in jail since he was caught by Kurdish soldiers in 2017.

He is one of several Brits, including Shamima Begum and two members of the notorious 'Beatles' gang, that are being held by the Kurds in north-east Syria, The Times reports.

According to The Guardian , Letts' mum said: "I’m worried that he could get killed in the crossfire.

"I know what people think, who cares about hundreds of Isis fighters, but one of them is my son."

The mother said she feared the SDF could ask prisoners to fight for them against Turkey.

Last night, Foreign Policy reported that US officials expected Turkey to attack Syria within 24 hours.

Donald Trump previously supported US-backed Kurdish forces by warning Turkey that he would 'obliterate' its economy if it attacked north-east Syria.

However, Washington subsequently seemed to soften its rhetoric, with a US Defense Department spokesman saying American troops were being withdrawn from the border as a result of the anticipated strike.

The spokesman said: "Unfortunately, Turkey has chosen to act unilaterally.

"As a result we have moved the U.S. forces in northern Syria out of the path of potential Turkish incursion to ensure their safety."
