The schools minister may be disappointed with the high court ruling on unauthorised absences from school, but ordering headteachers to ignore it is scandalous (Report, 10 June). The current extraordinary state of governance is such that nobody seems to care about this call to ignore the rule of law. Perhaps there are other judgments that ministers have told officials to flout under cover of the referendum?

• Before Richard Murphy shuts down the alley thread (Letters, 11 June), my grandma and my dad assured me and my siblings that in the darkest days of the 1920s, jigger rabbit stew saved many a Liverpool family from starvation. At these times, cat owners were known to take extra care of their pets. Are there any records of snicket, ginnel or jitty rabbits from around the country?

• Across the North Country many of us are familiar with lonnens. In Newcastle there are major roads called Two Ball Lonnen and Silver Lonnen. Close by, in the village of Walbottle, sitting astride Hadrian’s Wall, is Piggies Lonnen, which many of us as children walked along to school, passing on the way the pig farms owned by, yes, Johnny McSwine!
