Jharkhand: Minor dies of scorpion sting in Palamu village

DALTONGANJ: A Class VII student was fatally stung by a scorpion at Khaira Dohar village under Kishunpur police outpost area in Paton block of Palamu on Saturday. Arbaz Ansari (14) was buried on Sunday.

The grandfather of deceased, Ahmad Miyan, on Monday said his grandson was trying to wear jeans when the scorpion stung him multiple times on the leg. “He was rushed to a retired compounder at a government healthcare centre, where he was put on saline drip. His condition started deteriorating fast and so, he was rushed to Daltonganj but succumbed on the way,” he added.

Deceased Arbaz’s father Khejabu Ansari came home recently from Chandigarh, where he ekes out a living as a house painter.

Speaking about the incident, in-charge of Kishunpur police outpost Binod Ram said scorpion stings can sometimes prove to be fatal if anti-venom injection is not administered in time.

Former civil surgeon Dr Anil Kumar said scorpion sting might cause mayocardiatis and death in few cases. Out of the 1,500 varieties of scorpion, the stings of 30 might prove fatal if anti-venom injections are not administered in time. Scorpion sting can cause severe anaphylaxis where accelerated heart rate, breathing difficulty, muscle twitching, high blood pressure, exhaustive sweating, and panic may cause death, he warned.

A pall of gloom has descended upon the village. The DJ sound company booked for the Muharram celebration on Tuesday has been cancelled. A resident of Khaira Dohar, Sadru Ansari, said the rites and rituals of the festival would be observed in a low-key manner.
