Jharkhand: Health department takes up special drive to fast track Covid vaccination

RANCHI: To accelerate the pace of vaccination of booster doses and to increase the inoculation coverage in the 12-17 years category, the state health department is going to organise Covid Teeka Maha Abhiyan phase-II for the next 60 days.

The special exercise is aimed at achieving cent percent coverage of the Covid-19 vaccination in all age groups as well as to provide precautionary dose to all persons aged 60 and above. Apart from that, the exercise also aims at achieving cent per cent vaccination of all the frontline staff, including the healthcare workers, in the precautionary dose category.

A letter in this regard was issued by additional chief secretary (health) Arun Kumar Singh directing all deputy commissioners to complete all required necessary arrangements before the special drive. The letter has also directed DCs to organise District Vaccination Task Force meeting in respective districts and to direct officials’ co-ordinating up to panchayat level for a strict performance mapping.

The letter also directed the deputy commissioners to make elaborate arrangements for improving the coverage among beneficiaries of age 12 to 17 years.

As per the micro plan for the drive, the districts have been asked to set targets from city to panchayat levels and have also been asked to do colour coding of urban block/Panchayat/ village /ward/ slums with different colour which will has to be changed as per the daily coverage.

Talking to TOI, the state nodal officer for vaccination drive, Dr Rakesh Dayal, said: “We have successfully organised a similar exercise on a campaign mode from December 16, 2021 to January 15, 2022 under ‘Har Ghar Dastak Abhiyan’ and we are confident that we will get better results as the duration will be of 60 days this time. This time our focus will be on achieving cent per cent coverage in the younger population as that is the category which is new to the vaccination drive. Apart from that, increasing coverage among the 60+ population for precautionary dose will be the another area where we will put more focus.”

On being asked what steps the department is planning to take, Dayal said: “We are taking elaborate steps like setting up dedicated Covid Vaccination Centres (CVCs) for the 12-17 age group. Apart from that, we will be setting up CVCs at schools and colleges to improve the numbers.”

The move for setting up dedicated CVCs as well as separate queues comes in the wake of poor vaccination coverage among those aged below 17. As per state health department records, a total of 7,45,228 beneficiaries in 12-14 age group, out of 15,94,000, have taken the first dose, which comes around 47% of the targeted population. The coverage in second dose in this category stands at a mere 13%. In the 15-17 year age group, the coverage stands at around 60% with 14,44,923, out of 23,98,000, taking the first dose while only 34% have taken the second dose.

The coverage of precautionary dose among the 60 and above category, too, continues to be slim as a mere 39% of healthcare workers, 29% of frontline workers and 4% of people above 60+ have taken the precautionary jab.
