Jharkhand Government begins drive to identify statehood movement activists

RANCHI: Chief minister Hemant Soren on Friday inaugurated the state government’s project to identify the men and women who took part in the separate statehood movement.

At a programme held in Jharkhand Mantralaya auditorium in the afternoon, Soren unveiled a new logo of the Jharkhand Rajya Andolankari Chayan Ayog and a new format of application by which the participants of the statehood movement and their dependants can file claims for pension, which is in effect since 2011 but was revised last year.

“When the separate statehood movement began, the tribal community was mocked. But in the end, their resilience paid off,” Soren said. “Even though I am addressing this programme as chief minister, I have the identity of being the son of a Jharkhand revolutionary, of which I am proud,” he added.

Stating that the identification procedure of Jharkhand revolutionaries was complicated before he assumed office in December 2019, Soren said his government went the extra mile in simplifying the identification process. “The objective was to ensure that everyone who participated in the statehood movement was given their due share.”

In 2021, the Soren cabinet announced that statehood movement activists who were jailed for more than six months will be given a monthly pension of Rs 7,000 while those who were jailed for three to five months will get Rs 5,000.

That apart, the kin of those, who were in jail or suffered physical handicap of 40% or more during their jail term, will be eligible for direct recruitment in grade III and IV jobs of the state government according to their educational qualifications or through 5% reservation.
