JHANSI: The 30-year-old man, who had allegedly ignited a fire in a three-storey residential building in Madhya Pradesh's Indore leaving seven persons dead and nine others injured, hails from Nagra area of Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh.
The accused, Sanjay alias Shubham Dixit, was nabbed on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday and booked under Sections 302 (murder) and 436 (mischief by fire intending to cause destruction of any building) of the Indian Penal Code.
Sanjay's father, Devendra Dixit, who is an engineer in the railways, said he had severed all ties with his son a few years ago and had even got an advertisement published in this connection. He said Sanjay was an intelligent boy and had gone to Bhopal a decade ago to study engineering. "He fell into bad company. He left studies midway and took up a job in insurance sector in Delhi," he said. His father said the last he learnt about Sanjay was in Delhi and added that he had no idea how he landed in Indore.
Sanjay had also stopped talking to his family. He would often visit Jhansi but never visited his home, barring a couple of times.
Police said Sanjay fell from a wall in a bid to escape and sustained injuries. He had shifted to Indore a year ago and spent six months in the same building which he set afire during the wee hours of Saturday, police said.
