Jezebel Issues Editor’s Note On Article About Casting Etsy Witch Spells On Charlie Kirk

CHARLIE-KIRK-JEZEBEL

Feminist website Jezebel has issued an editorial note after one of its articles about Charlie Kirk gained traction in the wake of his shocking death

The 31-year-old right-wing political commentator was fatally shot while speaking at a campus event at the Utah Valley University earlier today.

Just days prior to his death, Jezebel had published an article with the headline, ‘We Paid Some Etsy Witches to Curse Charlie Kirk’.

The accompanying article saw the unnamed Jezebel reporter reflect on Kirk’s “far-right misogyny” and propose “punishing [him] for the years of regressive rhetoric” by paying for an Etsy witch to cast spells on him.

In a viral trend adopted in some corners of the internet, curses, potions or spiritual rituals are sold on the online marketplace by people proclaiming to be witches, allowing buyers to cast spells on people of their choosing.

The Jezebel reporter said they reached out to a total of three Etsy witches. They first purchased a ‘Make Everyone Hate Him’ spell from Etsy to be placed on Kirk, as well as a $50 ($75 AUD) ‘Booster Spell’ to “make it work faster”.

Images of ‘proof’ that the spells were cast were sent by some of the witches, including a burning photograph of Kirk.

After news of Kirk’s death, Jezebel added an Editor’s Note to the original article reminding readers of its publication date and condemning his shooting.

“This story was published on September 8. Jezebel condemns the shooting of Charlie Kirk in the strongest possible terms. We do not endorse, encourage, or excuse political violence of any kind,” the note read.

The reporter also reiterated in the original article that they were not wishing ill-will upon Kirk beyond minor grievances that might “ruin his day”.

“I want to make it clear, I’m not calling on dark forces to cause him harm. I just want him to wake up every morning with an inexplicable zit. I want his podcast microphone to malfunction every time he hits record. I want his blue blazers to suddenly all be one size too small,” they wrote.

“To ruin his day with the collective feminist power of the Etsy coven would be my life’s greatest joy,” they added.

The Jezebel article has since gone viral on social media as users have reacted to news of Kirk’s death and the seemingly foretelling results of the spells.

It comes as eyewitnesses have pieced together what happened at Utah Valley University, with some claiming Kirk was discussing mass shootings at the time he was shot.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that two suspects had been apprehended, but that both were released as the investigation into the shooter remains ongoing.
