Jewish organisations are calling for Stephen Miller to be fired following reports last week by the Southern Poverty Law Centre (SPLC) revealing that the senior White House adviser sought to promote white nationalist ideas through the alt-right website Breitbart,
Mr Miller has been the architect of Donald Trump’s immigrationpolicies, including limiting refugees, the Muslim ban, and family separation.
In the year before joining the Trump campaign, Mr Miller was consistently sharing content from websites such as VDARE and American Renaissance with Breitbart writer Katie McHugh, suggesting ideas for stories on the site.
In an open letter to Mr Trump, the Leadership Council of Civil and Human Rights, a coalition of 200 organisations, said of him: “Stephen Miller represents white supremacy, violent extremism, and hate — all ideologies that are antithetical to the fundamental values that guide our democracy. Allowing him to remain a White House adviser is a betrayal of our national ideals of justice, inclusion, and fairness.”
In a statement to Axios, the White House accused those calling for Mr Miller’s resignation or termination of anti-semitism.
Mr Miller is himself of Jewish descent.
The Anti-Defamation League, Bend the Arc: Jewish Action, and the Union for Reform Judaism, all of which are Jewish organisations, signed the letter.
Last year, Mr Miller’s uncle wrote a scathing editorial in Politico denouncing his anti-immigrant and discriminatory policies, pointing out that Mr Miller’s grandfather fled antisemitism in what is now Belarus for a productive life in the United States.
