Jewellery store employees use swords to fend off robbers during terrifying smash and grab

This is the extraordinary moment employees in a jewellery shop chased off robbers with swords during a terrifying daylight raid.

Video footage shows four would-be thieves smashing a window at a jewellers in Ontario, Canada, at about noon local time according to police.

One, dressed in a balaclava, clambered inside but a quick-thinking staff member ran to meet him brandishing a giant, curved sabre.

"When we saw them coming in, that's when we really took action and we rushed them," said Arjun Kumar, the shop owner's son, according to CBC.

He said one of the robbers had a handgun but added he was "willing to do anything to keep them out."

The four men made off in a dark-coloured SUV after the incident on Wednesday at Ashok Jewellers in Mississauga, Peel Regional Police officials said.

"The four suspects attempted to gain entry to the store by breaking a window at which point the employees were able to fend off the suspects, who then fled the area northbound on Airport Road in a dark coloured Dodge Durango," said the force.

They released the footage as part of an appeal for witnesses and information.

Peel Pc Danny Marttini said he understood people wanted to protect their shops but urged caution for personal safety.

"At the end of the day, property is property," he told CBC.
