Corey Davis won’t play another snap for the Jets this season.
The veteran wideout will undergo season-ending core muscle surgery on Tuesday, per Robert Saleh. That will knock him out for 8-10 weeks.
“I feel awful for Corey,” Saleh said Monday. “He’s one of the true pros in this league.”
Davis was one of Joe Douglas’ big free agent signings this past offseason. New York inked the ex-Titan to a three-year, $37.5 million contract with $27 million guaranteed to be the team’s No. 1 receiver.
It was an up-and-down season for Davis, who at times looked fantastic but also dropped five passes and missed three games with various other injuries. He ends the 2021 season with 34 receptions for 492 yards and four touchdowns in nine games.
In his absence, the Jets will continue to lean on rookie Elijah Moore, as well as veteran Jamison Crowder. Second-year wideout Denzel Mims should see extended looks as well, though he hasn’t made much use of his opportunities, even with Davis out of the lineup.
Losing Davis is another devasting blow for Douglas’ free agent class, which also lost Carl Lawson, Lamarcus Joyner and Vinny Curry for the season, as well as linebacker Jarrad Davis and Tyler Kroft to multi-week injuries.
