Jets wish Bennett Jackson happy birthday on Twitter — right before cutting him

Bennett Jackson has had better birthdays.

The Jets waived the safety on Monday, as they needed to elevate QB Luke Falk from the practice squad. Monday was Jackson’s 28th birthday, though, and the team wished him a happy birthday on Twitter earlier in the day. After the Jets waived Jackson, his happy birthday wishes from the official team Twitter account mysteriously disappeared.

Jackson, inactive Week 1, was among four of the Jets’ waiver claims before the season began. He was a sixth-round pick by the Giants in 2014 and also spent time on the Ravens practice squad last year. He failed to make Baltimore’s 53-man roster out of camp this summer.

The NFL can be a cruel, heartless business, but the Jets have known they were elevating Falk to the 53-man roster since Thursday. They could have done one right by Jackson and not cut him on his birthday, but as Adam Gase said earlier this week, the NFL stands for “Not for Long.”
