Goodnight
Thanks to everyone who joined me for Sunday sportwatch, it was a jam-packed day of action with three Rugby League World Cup fixtures, a Fast5 netball tournament to wrap up and two A-league fixtures amongst NBL, W-League and a whole lot more.
In our first feature game, the Jets and Wanderers drew in what was a game of two halves. While the Wanderers dominated early, and Mark Bridge capitalised with a wonderful, long-range strike, the Jets struck back in the second with much more fluency and speed. They were rewarded with a Petratos goal after a powerful long-range shot by O’Donovan deflected off Janjetovic’s hands. Jumpei took man of the match after some impressive footwork continually created chances for his side. Later in the A-League, we had another draw - this time with the Mariners unlucky not to come away with a win after they peppered Thomas’ goal. Shots to Pain and Appiah in particular were unlucky not to find the back of the net - instead hitting the woodwork. That leaves both the Mariners and Victory mired toward the bottom of the ladder, on zero wins for the season.
Finally in our second feature game, England proved too classy for a surprise-packet Jamaican outfit that defied its more fancied rivals in Australia and New Zealand to make the gold-medal playoff. It was an excellent performance by England with stirring performances by Housby (9/11), and Harten (7/16 - although those stats don’t do her influence justice).
Results largely went expected in the RLWC, but Tonga underlined their status as possible left-field challengers, while Ireland came away with an underdog victory over the Azzurri.
Thanks for joining me, and I’ll see you next week.
A-League Central Coast Mariners draw 1-1 with Melbourne Victory
Troisi has a long-range shot on goal with a minute remaining, but it lacks the power needed to challenge Glover, and is easily caught.
Appiah then has a chance to steal it with a header in the last half minute, but it’s straight to Thomas.
The Mariners might consider themselves unlucky not to come away with their first win for the season, after Pain hit the woodwork, as did Appiah. The Mariners had several unrivalled chances to win the match, but had to settle for a draw.
Player of the match goes to Rhys Williams for his work down back. De Silva admits it was a lost opportunity for a win for his side, who he says “played really well”.
A-League H2 92:00 Central Coast Mariners 1-1 Melbourne Victory
Yellow for Hoole (his third booking this season) - after a sliding, late tackle. It’s a flat delivery from Troisi after the free-kick, and it’s headed to safety by the Mariners’ wall.
A-League H2 90:00 Central Coast Mariners 1-1 Melbourne Victory
Asdrubal comes off for Bingham in the 90th minute.
Four minutes of stoppage time to play - and to find a breakthrough win for one of these sides.
A-League H2 88:00 Central Coast Mariners 1-1 Melbourne Victory
Hoole with a stirring run into the box, he backs himself on his left, but skies it. Victory barely holding on for a draw here.
Barbarouses gets an opportunity after he’s fed by Milligan - but it’s a brilliant sliding tackle save. Close shave for the Mariners who have dominated general play.

A-League H2 85:00 Central Coast Mariners 1-1 Melbourne Victory
Appiah comes again, this time into the box leaving it for McGing - but it’s too measured a build-up this time. They had plenty of numbers in the box, and were too slow. So many chances going begging for the Mariners.
A-League H2 83:00 Central Coast Mariners 1-1 Melbourne Victory
No penalty for the Mariners - after McGing went flying into the turf. Looks like the right call on the replay.
Appiah has a gilt-edged chance to put his side in the lead - beating Thomas to the right, and curling a shot back inward only to hit the woodwork. Well, they’ll rue that one.
A-League H2 79:00 Central Coast Mariners 1-1 Melbourne Victory
Risky challenge by Williams stops De Silva in his tracks in the box - but it’s effective. 70% possession to the Mariners in the last ten minutes.
Theoharus comes on for the Victory - for just his third A-League appearance.
A-League H2 77:00 Central Coast Mariners 1-1 Melbourne Victory
Victory momentarily down to 10 while George walks gingerly off - but he’s back on within moments.
End-to-end football at the moment with no clear winner, but Mariners have had most of the possession in the last five minutes.
A-League H2 74:00 Central Coast Mariners 1-1 Melbourne Victory
I’m back - just. Victory got the equaliser back in the 65th minute through George after Golec concedes the foul in a dangerous position for the Mariners. George takes the free kick, clips the post, and the ball finds the top left corner of the net.
Yellow to Valeri while George looks to be in some pain - is it a hamstring?
Pain is substituted off for the Mariners - and Appiah takes his place.
Back soon
OK I’m in need of a dinner break - but i’ll be back later with the result of the final A-League game between the Mariners and Victory (currently tied at 0-0).
Rugby League World Cup wrap-up
Here’s a nice little wrap-up of some of today’s action in the Rugby League World Cup from Wires:
Tonga underlined their status as World Cup dark horses as they blew Scotland away in the first half on their way to a 50-4 victory. Powerful forwards Jason Taumalolo and Andrew Fifita were among the big-name defectors in the Tonga line-up and they played their part as the Pacific heavyweights flexed their muscles.
Ireland had earlier defied sweltering heat in Cairns to beat Italy but fellow home nation Scotland were never in the game in the second part of the double-header.
Michael Jennings scored a hat-trick while Taumalolo, Sika Manu, Daniel Tupou and Peni Terepo also crossed for tries in a one-sided first period.
Scotland, who came into the tournament ranked fourth in the world after an impressive 2016 Four Nations, regained some lost pride after the break. Danny Addy went over for Scotland’s first try of the World Cup but Tupou and Ata Hingano both crossed late on as Tonga finished strongly.
Meanwhile, Lebanon warmed up for their World Cup clash against England with a history-making 29-18 win over France in Canberra.
The French twice battled back to draw level at 18-18 but Parramatta half-back Mitchell Moses edged the Cedars back in front with a 75th-minute drop goal before clinching their first World Cup win and a likely quarter-final spot with a solo try.
Lebanon, coached by former Kangaroo international Brad Fittler, suffered a blow before kick-off when forward Chris Saab pulled out of the game after being concussed in the warm-up but they took an early lead through full-back Anthony Layoun and were never behind.
France will now need to beat either Australia at Canberra Stadium on Friday or England in Perth on November 12 to keep alive their chances of reaching the knockout stages.”

Fast5 Netball England beat Jamaica 34-29
Harten goes for six with just a couple of seconds left, she misses but it doesn’t matter. The English are champions - and gold medallists.
England promised a dance, and all they can manage is ole ole ole... look it was fun. Guthrie says she thinks they ought challenge Jamaica for a dance-off - not sure they’d win!
In all seriousness, it was an excellent performance by England. Housby had 9/11, while Harten scored 7/16 (although those stats don’t do her influence justice). Rachel Dunn also played a nice cameo with 2/4.
Fowler-Reid had 15/25, while Beckford - who was on fire all tournament - only managed the 2/11 in the grand final. Still, they went undefeated in the tournament to date, and Fowler-Reid says she’s “stoked” about how well “her girls” did. All credit to them for a wonderful campaign, but England were deserved winners.

Two to Housby and I reckon that’s gold to England.
Fast5 Netball Q4 00:30 Jamaica 29-32 England
Turnover goes to the Jamaicans - but Housby finds a touch to turn it back over. That might do it for England.
Jamaica, however, turn it over after a held ball. Beckford goes for three and misses. Jamaica get it back. She misses again!
Fast5 Netball Q4 01:30 Jamaica 29-32 England
Housby with a safe two for England and they have a three point advantage with a minute and a half to go.
Fowler-Reid misses the two, rebound to England.
Fast5 Netball Q4 02:30 Jamaica 29-30 England
Both teams trade errors and England edge in front by the one point. Fowler-Reid can’t sink this one, but Jamaica get the ball back after it comes off English hands. She goes for three - twice - and misses, twice.

Fowler-Reid gets another two to put the Jamaicans back in front. Can she turn this quarter?
Housby tries the four but misses.
Fast5 Netball Q4 04:30 Jamaica 27-26 England
Harten gets her own rebound and finds Housby in the four zone, but Jamaica grab the rebound. They’ve tightened their defence and the English suddenly look nervous with the power play in effect. Jamaica hit the lead with two.
Fast5 Netball Q4 05:00 Jamaica 25-26 England
Harten gets an easy one to start the power play. Think they might play it safe in this last quarter given the scoreline. Fowler-Reid gets one back.
Fast5 Netball Q3 end Jamaica 24-24 England
Jamaica throw the ball away with twenty seconds remaining - ending all chance of capitalising on their power play. We’re all tied up with a power play to come for England. Think it’s all over for the Jamaicans.
Fast5 Netball Q3 01:00 Jamaica 24-24 England
Fowler-Reid misses another four - but rebounds for two. Jamaica going at 54% shooting accuracy, England 65%.
Harten nails a two. Decisive quarter by the English.
Fast5 Netball Q3 02:00 Jamaica 22-22 England
England eating up plenty of the power play quarter with solid possession play. Housby scores and it’s level - well done to the English.
Fowler-Reid goes for the four, sensing the desperation, but misses by a fair way.
Fast5 Netball Q3 03:10 Jamaica 22-21 England
Beckford for three - would’ve been six. They take two from the Fowler-Reid rebound. Need to keep going for the big shots.
Fast5 Netball Q3 03:30 Jamaica 20-21 England
Harten slots a single for England before Guthrie makes an important intercept - putting her body on the line to win back possession for her team. Harten ends up with it - and Housby ends up shooting for two. They have it - they’ve done well to hold Jamaica off so far in their power play quarter.
Fast5 Netball Q3 04:50 Jamaica 20-18 England
Jamaica’s power play! All points count as double for them this term. They open their account with two (from a safe, one-point position). Here’s another two. Playing it safe.
Fast5 Netball Q2 end Jamaica 16-18 England
Rachel Dunn for the three to claw the lead back for England! Both teams going at the ball with desperation. Dunn almost makes another three but it misses narrowly. Fowler-Reid likewise misses another three, and Beckford rebounds but misses the two.
Half-time break!
Fast5 Netball Q2 01:05 Jamaica 16-15 England
Great shot by Fowler-Reid who makes another two - and in the blink of an eye the Jamaicans are right back in it.
Wait they’re in front! Beckford with a huge three!

Beckford makes the two - can they claw back the significant gap? They’ll have a power play quarter next.

Fast5 Netball Q1 00:30 Jamaica 4-13 England
Harten makes another three! Wow. That one was off a contact decision. Here goes Harten for another two after several contact calls. She misses, but the English gain the rebound. Huge start from them.
Fast5 Netball Q1 01:40 Jamaica 4-10 England
Harten finally misses one but gains the rebound and converts. She’s missed just the one. Beckford is going for the long-bombs for the Jamaicans, while Fowler-Reid, with her towering stature, is there for the rebound and the easy one, should Beckford miss.
Three-pointer to Harten! That’s big.
Fast5 Netball Q1 03:16 Jamaica 3-6 England
The frenetic pace of this game takes a little getting used to. Both teams taking the safe option with just one-point shots. Three to Fowler-Reid already who looks dominant. Jo Harten has one, Housby three for the English.
Fast5 Netball Jamaica v England
Third quarter power play for Jamaica. England to come home in the fourth for their power play - interesting call for the English - they’ll hope to be in touch before coming home with the advantage.

Some rousing renditions of each country’s national anthem sets the stage for the (very quick) game to come.

Fast 5 Netball World Series
What is Fast5 Netball, you may ask? Well there’s only five playing positions - two shooters (GS and GA), two defenders (GK and GD) and one midcourter (C).
Ther’es only four six-minute quarters, so it’s a short and sharp game.
Each team has a power play quarter where all goal points scored are doubled - the team that wins the toss gets the first choice of their power play quarter.
All centre passes are taken by the team that didn’t score the last goal - the coin toss again determines who takes the first centre pass each quarter. The winner takes the initial centre pass in the first and third quarters, while the loser takes the second and fourth quarters.
There’s also three different scoring zones. 3 points for goals outside the goal circle (long-bombs). 2 points for shots made in the outer circle (3.5-4.9m). And finally, 1 point goes for goals scored in the inner circle.
Fast5 also includes rolling substitutions, which means a change can be made at any stage of the game, during breaks or play. There’s a designated area where subs have to be made.
The grand final is being contested by England and Jamaica - how about that?
Newcastle Jets draw 1-1 with Western Sydney Wanderers
Both clubs stay undefeated, the Jets now with eight points out of a possible 12 and the Wanderers with six. It was an entertaining game in the end - with the Jets starting out the far inferior side, before they found plenty of spark and carry in the second half. Mark Bridge - the Wanderers’ only goal-scorer with a wonderful first-half strike - says his side are disappointed not to have taken the win. It’s “one that got away”.
Jumpei takes man of the match after creating plenty of opportunities with his excellent, speedy footwork.
Petratos was the other goal-scorer, converting in the 68th minute after O’Donovan’s powerful shot on goal forced the deflection from Janjetovic. For the Jets, Topor-Stanley impressed in defence, while Champness looked dangerous every time he went near the ball after being subbed on. A bright future awaits for him, I feel.
A-League H2 95:00 Newcastle Jets 1-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
Hoffman curls one in, and Risdon is forced to concede a header. Petratos takes the corner to an expectant crowd, but the Jets are off-side after the ball is played back into the box.
A-League H2 93:00 Newcastle Jets 1-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
Both sides doing their best to force a late-winner - the Wanderers are holding on, but the Jets are looking more dangerous. O’Donovan with a diving header, but the glancing shot is just wide to the right. Nice kick from Hoffman to almost set up something from nothing.
A-League H2 90:00 Newcastle Jets 1-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
Five minutes of stoppage time - and Jumpei has a free-kick for a clumsy challenge from Hoffman, which earns him a yellow.
Plenty of time for a winner for either side.

A-League H2 89:00 Newcastle Jets 1-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
12 balls into area for Wanderers versus eight for Newcastle. 57% possession to the Wanderers this half also.
Risdon is challenged in the box but it’s a fair one - nice patient build-up by Western Sydney, but Aspro turns it over with an errant pass.
A-League H2 86:00 Newcastle Jets 1-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
Shabow is on for the Jets (Ugarkovic off) - with about ten minutes left. Some brilliant footwork and speed by Champness almost sets up Shabow but the Wanderers do well to clear. Aspro does make some contact with Shabow before clearing - no penalty, though.
A-League H2 82:00 Newcastle Jets 1-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
Here goes Sotirio, who has an immediate impact. His cross attempt is poor, but he still manages to force a corner - the eighth for the Wanderers (Jets have had just two).
It’s a short cross - to the near post, and is deflected by Petratos. Still, the Wanderers win it back for another Sotirio-forced cross. No luck as Nabbout wins a free-kick, and Bonevacia goes into the books for a poor tackle.
A-League H2 79:00 Newcastle Jets 1-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
Final substitution for the Wanderers with Cejudo off for Sotirio. He’s had a great game, Cejudo.
Nabbout almost finds the back of the net again, but it’s an acrobatic, diving save from Janjetovic. Nabbout finding plenty of ball - and dangerous ball - in these last few minutes.
Aspro is in the books for time-wasting.
A-League H2 76:00 Newcastle Jets 1-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
Nice footwork from Champness finds Petratos at long-range. He lofts a pass to Nabbout wide in the box, but the header is astray. Referee called play-on after Champness was taken out of the play. He’s created plenty since coming on.

Cejudo takes the free-kick and it’s off a Jet for a corner but it’s thwarted. The yellow goes to Vujica for time wasting after he kicks the ball away.

Baccus apparently feeling sick - no injury sustained. That’s great news for a man who has performed admirably for his side so far this season.
A-League H2 62:30 Newcastle Jets 0-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
He comes on and almost makes an immediate impact - Champness just wide to the right with a left-footed, slower strike. Went for the near post and very nearly pulled it off. Looked to have the keeper beaten.

Wayne Brown comes off for Joey Champness - who scored on debut for the Jets in round one. Let’s see what he can d to spark Newcastle.
A-League H2 58:20 Newcastle Jets 0-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
Baccus is finally forced off in visible pain - Bonevacia is on now with plenty of versatility to offer. 93% possession to WSW in the last five minutes.
Brilliant ball in by Llorente to Cejudo but he can’t quite make it. Probably should’ve headed that home - it was a beautiful pass from Llorente.
A-League H2 55:40 Newcastle Jets 0-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
Risdon played into a 50-50 situation by Herd - Hoffman seemingly lucky not to get a card.
Wanderers have had a mountain of possession this half - but there’s trouble with Baccus on the floor again. Looks to have an abdominal issue.
Backing up perception - Jumpei is running at 90% accuracy.
A-League H2 52:30 Newcastle Jets 0-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
Hamill is unmarked and goes for the header, but picks out a defender. Another cross for the Wanderers (their fifth). It’s another in-swinger, and Duncan spills it. Third time lucky. Cejudo goes with a similar delivery, but it’s picked off easily.
A-League H2 50:30 Newcastle Jets 0-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
Good crowding by the Jets defence, forcing Jumpei to go deep with the cross to Cejudo who powers a strike at goal - and misses by a fair margin. Jumpei causing endless headaches for the Jets.
A-League H2 47:30 Newcastle Jets 0-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
We’re back on here as the Jets look to claw back an equaliser. They win an early free-kick after a clumsy Risdon challenge earns him a yellow but they butcher it. Riera fails to capitalise on a dangerous turnover.
NBL
Meanwhile, in NBL news, The Sydney Kings eased pressure on coach Andrew Gaze with a thrilling 99-94 overtime NBL victory over the Illawarra Hawks in Wollongong.
Having lost their previous two games by a combined 47 points, the Kings proved they can win without injured captain Kevin Lisch, boosting their season record to 2-4 and leaving the Hawks stranded at the bottom of the ladder on 1-5.
Scores were tied 88-all at the end of regulation time before the Kings out-played their NSW rivals in the extra five-minute period.
W-League
For those wondering, here’s a wrap-up of the W-League action from this weekend - with several upsets to kickstart the season.
“The new W-League season kicked-off with Matildas’ superstar Sam Kerr delivering as usual, but less expected was the catalogue of upset results from traditional powerhouse teams. Champions Melbourne City, Canberra United and Sydney FC, who between them have won six of the nine titles, all crashed to uncomfortable defeats.
Two of last season’s also-rans rounded out the opening weekend of fixtures as Newcastle Jets collected a 2-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers in hot conditions on Sunday. Jenna Kingsley scored the winner with 12 minutes remaining just moments after Erica Halloway had cancelled out a first-half opener from former Wanderer Katie Stengel.
But the most significant result of the opening round was a Kerr-inspired 4-1 win for Perth Glory over a Melbourne City side brimming with big-name international recruits. Kerr backed up her reputation as a player who rises to the big occasion by getting on the scoresheet just two-and-a-half minutes into the season. The comprehensive victory in the grand final rematch suggests Glory are capable of winning a maiden title, after twice being the bridesmaids.
Kerr, fresh from being was named best player in USA’s prestigious NWSL, is in irresistible form while American attacker Rachel Hill and Costa Rican midfielder Raquel Rodriguez also look to be strong additions for the Glory.
The welcome return of Matildas’ striker Michelle Heyman after a 10 month injury absence was unable to help a new-look Canberra United open with a win against Melbourne Victory. Heyman scored an equaliser for United and had several other sights of goal. But it was unfancied Melbourne Victory who took all three points at home thanks to a second-half winner from English striker Natasha Dowie.
Meanwhile, a 3-1 win over old rivals Sydney FC made for a promising start for Brisbane Roar following several seasons of disappointment for the normally reliable Queenslanders.
Matildas’ midfielder Katrina Gorry got the Roar’s new 2017-18 campaign off to a perfect start by netting after just 20 seconds, while Allira Toby added further goals in each half.”

A-League half time Newcastle Jets 0-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
Some half-time stats:
52-48% possession to the Wanderers; 56-44% duels success rate to the Wanderers, and 67-33 aerial duels won for the Wanderers.
Have loved Jumpei’s energy, he’s really lit up an otherwise dull first half. Always creating and causing issues for his defender.
A-League half-time Newcastle Jets 0-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
Great defending by Kantarovski to halt Jumpei in his tracks. Looked a good chance for a penalty – but probably didn’t have good enough technique with his ball-handling. That’ll end the first half, with some improvement from the Jets as the half went on. Jumpei providing the bulk of the highlights so far.
Wanderers looking the better side. 50 touches to Baccus at almost 80% accuracy, while Risdon has 45 at the less impressive 58% passing accuracy. Llorente has also been dominating play, although looked very sore before the break.
A-League 47:00 Newcastle Jets 0-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
Nice cross from Petratos after the free-kick, but it’s to no avail after some poor movement from his teammates. He wins another from similar range – again with some nice shape, but it’s behind O’Donovan.
A-League 42:26 Newcastle Jets 0-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
Here’s that brilliant strike from Mark Bridge in the 16th minute. Meanwhile, Llorente, who has been heavily involved, cannons into a defender and is taking a while to pick himself back up. He’s had 36 touches, while Baccus has 42.

Finally something happening for the Jets – with O’Donovan forcing a corner.
Baccus is down for the Wanderers – now there’s a player you don’t want to lose. He’s off the ground now but looks right to continue.
Free-kick to the Jets after they fail to capitalise on the corner. This one comes after Nabbout takes a knee in the back of the hamstring from Risdon. It’s picked off easily by Llorente.
A-League 32:00 H1 Newcastle Jets 0-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
Cejudo follows Bridge in trying a flick from the edge of the box – but it fails to come off (again). Not sure that’s the way to penetrate the Jets’ defence. Still, the Jets are looking fairly impotent so I assume they’re taking some liberties.
A-League 30:00 H1 Newcastle Jets 0-1 Western Sydney Wanderers
Jumpei’s in some brilliant touch today – while Llorente has also been impressive. Will the Wanderers yet again deny the Jets a home victory? They last won a ‘home’ game in Coffs all the way back in January – and have barely given a yelp so far.

Very much looking forward to this battle – who do you pick? I’m going.... Riera, with a brace. Reckon the loss of Vargas will really hurt. By no means writing off the Jets, but no Vargas, plus lack of home ground advantage may prove telling. Looking forward to seeing Baccus’ passing game, too – he’s one of only three players to pass more than 200 times this season.
Today will see two of the league's in-form strikers, Roy O'Donovan and Oriol Riera do battle.

Newcastle Jets v Western Sydney Wanderers preview
Alright, so we’re getting ready for Jets v Wanderers at McDonald Jones stadium. The Wanderers will fancy their chances of a victory, given they’re undefeated in their last six matches against the Jets (they’ve won five, and drawn one) with four clean sheets in that period. They’ve also never lost at McDonald Jones (where they’ve won five and drawn two matches), while the Jets have a poor record at home, not having won there since 2017 (with three draws from five home games since). The Wanderers also have Oriol Riera on their side, who is at his dangerous best early this season, for three goals to date.
Newcastle, however, are undefeated in their first three games for the season (with two wins and one draw), and have the highest number of total shots (42), shots on target (tied at 14) and goals scored (nine) this season. They also have the highest average of shots at goal per passes (34). Irishman Roy O’Donovan, meanwhile, has started the season on fire with five goals to date (consider that Andrew Nabbout scored eight across the entire 2016/17 campaign) – including a first-half hat-trick against his old side, Central Coast Mariners.
Nick Cowburn will make his 50th A-League appearance today (and ninth against the Wanderers).
Ernie Merrick is facing the cameras now to discuss the big loss that is Ronald Vargas – who will be out for the next four to five months with the news that only the fibula - not the tibia as well - had been broken.
RLWC H2 60:22 Ireland 32-Italy 12
Michael Morgan is over for another! That came off the back of a horror error by James Tedesco, who tripped over at the crucial moment (and also faced a cruel bounce).
Looks like Wolfhounds will wind up victorious for an unlikely victory –they’re 20 up now after Finn converts.
Another heat break here with some very humid conditions up in Cairns. I might leave the RLWC there for a moment while I switch over and get ready for the A-League clash between the Jets and Wanderers.
RLWC H2 55:40 Ireland 26-Italy 12
Uh oh, Wilkie spills the ball after it bounces off his chest, and the Irish are able to run the ball nearly all the way down through McCarthy for a possible Michael Morgan try (he’s claiming it, anyway). On the replay, however, it looks as if the ball is flat, and the try is overturned.
They can’t stop the Irish scoring, this time, though, with Kyle Amor powering over to give the Irish a handy gap on the Italians. Finn converts. Impressive for a team that couldn’t win a game last World Cup.
Meanwhile it’s 6-6 in Lebanon v France (I can’t actually get that game on TV - it’s only available via streaming!)

The Italians almost score again through Jayden Walker after a knock-on from Kay, but there’s little let off for the Irish with another scrum to the Italians 20m out. Wouldn’t surprise if they scored for a third time – they’re looking dangerous.

Johns has left the field with a possible wrist injury. Tramontana moves to the halves. For those wondering, the Lebanon v France game has also begun – and the Lebanese have scored already in front of a huge crowd of local supporters.
Meanwhile, it’s contest back on here in Cairns with the Azzurri scoring their second try in a row – this one comes asJosh Mantellato flies for the high ball and offloads to Milone who in turn finds the line.

RLWC H2 44:30 Ireland 20-Italy 6
We’re back on here at Barlow Park in Cairns – and the Italians have started full of intent and running. They’ll need to after a dismal first half (all credit to Ireland, who were the far superior side).
Huge change missed by Castellaro – Tedesco put in a beautiful kick with Grix spilling the ball straight in Castellaro’s path. He, however, spills the ball, but the Azzurri can go again.

Netball Fast 5 World Series
As I said earlier, I’ll be bringing you the final of the Fast5 Netball World Series later in this blog – but Australia won’t be involved – with England and Jamaica qualifying for the grand final as the only two undefeated teams in the series:
“Victory over England would have placed the hosts in the box seat to secure a spot in the gold medal match but they were beaten 28-19.
Having also lost to Jamaica on Saturday, the Australians needed other results to go their way to stay alive but Jamaica then ended their chances by knocking off an inexperienced New Zealand 30-23.
After tallying 40 points in a commanding win over New Zealand on Saturday night, Australia finished with their lowest score of the tournament as stout English defence forced them into 18 turnovers.
England shooter Helen Housby had a strong influence, providing some key scoring moments to inspire the visitors.
A member of the NSW Swifts in the Super Netball competition, Housby nailed a super shot to close out England’s third quarter power play then added three goals in the final term to close out the win.
With honours even after the first period, Australia outscored England 8-3 in the power play second quarter and were poised to take a narrow lead into the final term before Housby’s late six-pointer swung the contest.
“It’s been brilliant,” said England midcourter Beth Cobden of England’s performances over the weekend. “Everyone’s really enjoyed it.”
“We’ve had a great week and it’s been really good vibes in the team so I think that’s showing on court.”
Australia play their final round robin match against a South African team that opened the second day of play with their first win in a 28-26 victory over Malawi.”

Women’s Ashes – Australia 101-0 (chasing 285)
Don’t forget that we’ve got a concurrent live blog happening at the moment – with England and Australia facing off in the third one-day international of this Ashes series. The English desperately need a win, and started well by setting a total of 285 for the Australians to chase down. Australia are 101-0 as we speak, with England dropping both Bolton and Healy earlier in their innings.
W-League
Speaking of the W-League, be sure to check out Ann Odong’s preview of this season, and her thoughts on how the league may be able to capitalise on the momentum of the Matildas.
W-League 71:00 Newcastle 1-0 Western Sydney
Good timing for me to check in on the W-League, which is live currently with the Jets and Wanderers facing off for the opening of their campaigns. Just the one goal to date with Katie Stengel scoring in the 14th minute with a right-footed finish from close range to the bottom left corner – it was a bad mistake by the Wanderers’ defence.

RLWC half-time Ireland 20-6 Italy
Finally, finally Grix’s pass is intercepted by local Justin Castellaro, and he runs the length of the field; they can’t catch him. The Italians sure needed that.
Now there’s a big punch on (or perhaps just a wrestle) after Jack Johns drops the ball on the kick off. It’s a scrum - chance for Ireland – Finn attempts a field goal but misses to the left. What an opening for the Wolfhounds.

The Irish are well on top in all areas in this game. They’ve dominated possession, 60% to 40%, and scored the three tries to none. Liam Finn has been on song with each conversion attempt, and added another two in the 17th minute with a penalty shot after an error by Mason Cerruto.

H1 31:23 Ireland 20-0 Italy
There’s plenty of RLWC action happening today – with Ireland currently taking on Italy, France to take on Lebanon from 4pm AEDT, and Scotland clashing with Tonga from 5:15pm AEDT.
Unexpectedly, the Irish are well on top in this one – at 14-0, with two tries within the first ten minutes. The first went to Liam Kay under two minutes, while the second went to George King in the ninth.
Would you believe it, the Irish have just scored again, with a double to Liam Kay after the Italians were penalised for a slow peel by Colin Wilkie.
Welcome
Hello everyone and welcome to this Sunday’s edition of Sportwatch. I’m Kate O’Halloran and I’m here to take you through all today’s action, whatever your preferred shape of ball.
There’s plenty happening in the world of Australian sport today, and our two feature games for are the 5pm all-NSW A-League clash between the Newcastle Jets and Western Sydney Wanderers at McDonald Jones Stadium, as well as the Fast 5 Netball World Series final.
First up, it’s the Wanderers and Jets at McDonald Jones stadium. They’ve also never lost at McDonald Jones (where they’ve won five and drawn two matches), while the Jets have a poor record at home, not having won there since 2017 (with three draws from five home games since).

Nick Cowburn will also make his 50th A-League appearance (and ninth against the Wanderers).
After that, I’ll take you to the Fast 5 Netball World Series final which won’t include Australia (more on that later)!
Back shortly with some Rugby League World Cup action and more.
Kate will be here shortly. In the meantime, here’s how yesterday panned out on a busy day of Australian sport:
