Sam Darnold has himself a new weapon to work with.
After addressing offensive tackle by taking Louisville’s Mekhi Becton with the 11th pick on Thursday night, Jets general manager Joe Douglas traded back 11 picks with the Seattle Seahawks and landed a playmaker on day two of the draft, selecting Baylor wide receiver Denzel Mims with the 59th pick.
Originally in possession of the No. 48 pick, New York traded back with Seattle in order to secure itself an additional third-round pick. The Jets now have three third-round selections at Nos. 68, 79 and 101.
In four years at Baylor, Mims caught 186 passes for 2,925 yards and 28 touchdowns. His senior season was his most productive, as he caught 66 passes for 1,020 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Mims is likely to begin the season lining up as a starting receiver opposite Breshad Perriman. With Mims and Perriman on the outside and Jamison Crowder in the slot, the Jets now have themselves a trio of wide receivers that can beat opposing defenses in a variety of ways.
With Douglas addressing the offensive line and adding a wideout for Darnold, his focus must now shift to addressing needs on the defensive side of the ball, such as cornerback and EDGE. Interior offensive line and running back also remain positions Douglas is likely to target as the draft progresses.
