Jets to sign ex-Vikings LB Anthony Barr

The Jets have finally found a pass-rusher.

The team will sign ex-Vikings OLB Anthony Barr when the new league year begins, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Per NFL Network’s Tom Peliserro, Barr will earn $14-$15 million annually.

The Jets had shown heavy interest in Barr in the days leading up to free agency, so this is a case of Gang Green getting its guy. Just 26 years old, Barr is coming off three-sack, 55-tackle campaign for the Vikings. He spent the first five years of his career in Minnesota.

While Barr has never recorded more than four sacks in a season — that was his rookie year — the Jets believe he can be their first dominant edge rusher since John Abraham. As ESPN’s Rich Cimini noted, Barr played off the ball in Minnesota, but the Jets plan on making him a key part of their pass rush. There’s no doubt that he will benefit from Gregg Williams’ aggressive scheme — and vice versa. Barr was an edge rusher at UCLA, where he recorded 23.5 sacks over his final two seasons.

In addition to his ability to get after the quarterback, Barr is also strong in coverage. He’s only got one interception and 22 passes defended for his career, but his athleticism makes him a tough linebacker to throw on.

With Barr set to sign, the Jets still have plenty of money to spend. Some of that could go to another linebacker, though one who plays up the middle. According to The Athletic’s Connor Hughes, the Jets are still in the hunt for C.J. Mosely, who would be another massive upgrade.

For now, the Jets can be happy knowing they got one of their most coveted free agents in Barr.
