Jets signing quarterback Joe Flacco on one-year contract

The New York Jets are adding a big name to their roster, signing quarterback Joe Flacco to a one-year contract.

The agency that represents Flacco, who spent last season with the Denver Broncos after 11 years with the Baltimore Ravens, announced the signing on its Twitter account.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the deal is worth $1.5 million, but can grow to $4.5 million with incentives.

With the Jets, the former Super Bowl MVP will reunite with general manager Joe Douglas, who was a scout for the Ravens when they drafted him 18th overall in 2008.

In college, Flacco led the University of Delaware to the NCAA FCS title game as a senior in 2007.

Flacco, who had neck surgery last month and reportedly is expected to be out until Sept. 1, will compete for the backup job behind Sam Darnold.

The Broncos placed the 35-year-old Flacco on injured reserve in November after he suffered a herniated disk in his neck and they released him in March.

Flacco started eight games, throwing for 1,822 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions.

Once he's healthy, Flacco would give the Jets an experienced option behind Darnold, and he could also provide some valuable mentoring to the young quarterback.

The Jets re-signed David Fales and drafted James Morgan in the fourth round last month, but Flacco gives them a more proven backup to Darnold, who has missed six games his first two NFL seasons.

The Jets were 0-6 in the games Darnold didn't start.

There was some speculation that the Jets might've been a landing spot for veteran quarterback Andy Dalton after he was released by the Cincinnati Bengals, but Dalton ultimately signed a one-year contract with the Dallas Cowboys that guarantees him $3 million but could increase to $7 million with incentives.

The Jets eventually found a veteran QB in Flacco.

In 12 NFL seasons, Flacco has thrown for 40,067 yards with 218 touchdowns and 141 interceptions.
