Jets add to LB corps by signing former 1st-round pick Stephone Anthony

With Avery Williamson out for the season, the Jets added depth at linebacker on Tuesday night.

The team signed linebacker Stephone Anthony and waived safety Santos Ramirez. Anthony is a familiar face to the Jets coaching staff, as he has connections to both head coach Adam Gase and outside linebackers coach Joe Vitt.

Anthony was a former first-round pick of the Saints’ back in 2015 out of the University of Miami. He had a strong rookie campaign, recording 112 combined tackles, one sack, five pass defenses and one interception. However, the following season, the Saints moved him to strongside linebacker and he wasn’t as successful. Anthony had 16 tackles in 10 games before being placed on injured reserve.

Anthony was then traded to the Dolphins in 2017 and played in eight games, recording 15 tackles. He played in all 16 games in 2018 but only made seven tackles.

The 27-year-old was a free agent this offseason and signed with the Falcons in July before being released this past Sunday.

Now, with Williamson done for the year, Anthony will fight for a backup job while bringing veteran experience to a rather young group of linebackers.
