The Jets’ kicking situation took an unexpected turn on Sunday morning, as the team announced that Chandler Catanzaro has decided to retire. To replace him, New York signed Taylor Bertolet.
Catanzaro, 28, returned to the Jets in April after spending 2018 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Throughout the first two weeks of training camp, he battled inconsistency. His struggles were further accentuated in New York’s preseason opener against the Giants, where he missed two PATs in the first half. In his career, Catanzaro went 119-142 (83.8%) on field goal attempts and 182-196 (92.9%) on extra points.
Bertolet, who spent last summer with the Jets, returns to New York after stints with the Salt Lake Stallions of the American Football Alliance and Denver Broncos earlier this summer. In four preseason games with the Jets last season, Bertolet went 4-4 on field goals and 3-4 on extra points.
