Jets sign fourth-round pick TE Trevon Wesco

The New York Jets have signed fourth-round pick Trevon Wesco, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post. Wesco is the first Jets draft pick to sign.

A fourth-round pick, the Jets are hoping Wesco can be their blocking tight end for the foreseeable future while improving his pass-catching abilities. Eric Tomlinson owned that role the past two seasons but left a lot to be desired as a two-way player.

Wesco comes in as a raw rookie in the passing game. Developing Wesco could take some time to shore up in a two-tight end system, but New York can afford to be patient with the emergence of Chris Herndon.

Wesco presents the perfect complement to Herndon. Herndon is an excellent pass-catcher and has already developed a rapport with Sam Darnold. While he held his own, blocking is by no means his strong suit. That’s where Wesco comes in to play as a dynamic blocking tight end who can be a force in both the run and pass game.

The Jets have to set themselves up for the possibility of Herndon being reprimanded by the league office for his DWI arrest stemming from last summer. In all likelihood, Herndon will face a one- or two-game suspension.

By getting Wesco signed to a contract early, the Jets are ensuring that they can get a head start on preparing him for a possible increased role while Herndon likely serves a suspension.
